Our Story
At the tender age of two, I noticed subtle yet significant differences in how my twins experienced the world. Sensory issues colored my days in ways others couldn't comprehend. I spent countless hours searching for "just right" activities that would engage their senses, satisfy their intellectual curiosity and quench their thirst for knowledge, while also catering to their intense desire to be physically active. Nevertheless, I came to the realization that I must be cautious in selecting activities that wouldn't overwhelm or overstimulate them. With the guidance of our early intervention team, we created a sensory diet consisting of activities that supported sensory regulation. We spent our weekends experimenting with hundreds of play dough recipes, creating colorful rice bins, and making kinetic sand. My boys played with our concoctions for hours. Exploring the various textures and kneading the dough was one of the many kinesthetic activities that provided for them the sensory input their bodies craved. Those early days, fraught with uncertainty, taught me invaluable lessons about the power of sensory input. It wasn't just a matter of comfort; it was a fundamental need, an innate craving shared by all humans. I began applying everything I learned about sensory input to my job as a leading educator and witnessed incredible results. When 9th grade students came to my office in a state of stress, they grabbed the play dough, sand, or rice and it immediately calmed them. It wasn't magic. It was science. And truthfully, who doesn't find play dough therapeutic?
